Time Management (part 3) – Goal Setting

My last 2 blog posts were about a time management class I taught recently. We had 3 hours together and we really got to dig in to figure out why most of our previous efforts failed & how to make our routines and goals stick this time.

Here are my detailed tips on how to set, achieve & maintain your GOALS:

Step 1 should be to stop calling them “goals” or more importantly “new year’s resolutions” because we are already moaning and groaning when we hear those words right?!? Let’s call them small changes I can make or an adjustment or tweak to what you are already doing. If it’s food related, I love the concept of ADDING (more fruits and veggies or more water) to what you are eating instead of taking away your favorite treats. See how a little shift is way better than something you are dreading?

STEP 1: What do you want to achieve?

*Make your goal attainable. If you have never run a mile, don’t make your goal to run a marathon next weekend. You want to set yourself up for success.*

ex. read more books, walk more, send notes to loved ones, plant your garden

STEP 2: When do you want to achieve your goal – set a date:

If it’s a large goal, give yourself the time to do it. Or give yourself daily, weekly or monthly dates.

STEP 3: What are the steps to get to your goal?

Write down what you are going to do each day, week or month to get you to your goal. Put each step on your calendar and set reminders.

STEP 4: What are your obstacles?

Write down what may get in your way. For example, the holidays are always a busy time so take account plans you already have, people who may derail your progress or even binge-watching shows. Once you have named your obstacles, it will be easier to overcome them.

STEP 5: What is your reward?

I want you to come up with something you love that you don’t often do. This may be a bath, nap, massage, date night or if it’s a really big goal, a trip or splurge. You have to actually reward yourself when you achieve your goals. Most people just pat themselves on the back but next time, you won’t be as motivated.

STEP 6: Maintenance

This is the most challenging step for most people. Either you tried and gave up or you didn’t really try or you achieved your goal and 1 month later you are back to old habits. After your goal date, set a weekly reminder on your calendar that says, “what can I ADD”? or “I am WORTH it!” This is a gentle reminder to yourself to continue in the good habits and routines you started so you don’t have to start all over again.

I believe in you!
