Swedish Death Cleaning – The Best Gift You Can Give Your Loved Ones

There is a TV show on Peacock called Swedish Death Cleaning. It is based on a wonderful book:

The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning | Book by Margareta Magnusson | Official Publisher Page | Simon & Schuster (simonandschuster.com)

I will take you through each episode in future blog posts so you can get a new lesson and understanding from an organizers perspective. This show (and book) can be a life changer for you. In this post, I’ll give you a general idea of what death cleaning is and the many ways it can help you sort through all that stuff.

I know what you are thinking, “death cleaning” sounds morbid and awful but I am here to tell you, it’s a wonderful book, show and the nicest thing you could do for your loved ones.

We are all going to die right? Most of us don’t like thinking about death but it’s going to happen and what will be the fate of all the items you have accumulated in your lifetime?

Instead of avoiding the piles of stuff, go through it one room at a time and find the treasures. Be selective by choosing only 1 or 2 items in each room. What would you grab if the house was on fire?

Write down the story about your family treasures. What is the history? Why is it so important to you?

Put each treasure in a box with the story. Wrap them and give them to your loved ones now while you can tell them the meaning. This way, you are gifting your treasures while also de-cluttering your home which will save your family or friends from doing it later.

In my next several posts, I will talk about the different episodes and people they helped. Hopefully, this will inspire you to get started on your own home.
